Ecology Matters – How Landscape Inspires Architecture
Each year, Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentices migrated with the seasons between Taliesin in the east and Taliesin West in the west — a tradition that embodied their deep connection to place. During one such return to Taliesin West, Wright remarked:
“A characteristic thing in the desert here is, of course, the desert itself. And I have always regarded it as the greatest lesson in construction. Form following function if you like — or form and function being one — that exists.”— Frank Lloyd Wright on Desert Life, November 29, 1952
Wright believed that the desert is a treasure trove of lessons and inspiration, particularly for those interested in design. By observing and responding to the surrounding environment, designers can discover harmonious, significant, and distinctive design principles — even what might be called a design language — which architects and designers continually seek.
